Crap

Yeah, that's basically what I'll be eating from this point until the boys are born.

Because I have it.

The Diabeetus, of the gestational variety.

Next the Pregnancy Police are probably going to come take away my television and computer.

I'll be meeting soon with a nutritionist at the diabetes center at our hospital, so she can deliver the final blows -- the finger-pricking monitor and a list of dietary restrictions that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

If anyone out there has had gestational diabetes and wants to encourage, educate, or empathize with me, I'm all ears. Especially appreciated are the stories of how your new eating habits led to healthy weight loss, clear skin, shiny hair, and riches beyond your wildest dreams.

Crap.

Aw crap (had to rewrite that twice as I'm not sure how you feel about potty mouthed people!)that sucks :( I'm SO sorry you have to deal with this. I am having my first craving of my pregnancy, I want cheesecake. I don't care what kind, frozen or restaurant I WANT CHEESECAKE but JACK (aka evil prison warden) says I'm having my GD test in a few weeks and I need to watch how much sugar I eat. ARGHHGHGHGH. The thought of not having sugar in my life makes me want to weep. Okay, I'm being facetious in the sense that if I get GD I will survive but it will definitely be an inconvenience and difficult since sugar and me are BFF.

As for good stories, I can tell you that my friend got GD while pregnant and she actually dropped her baby weight faster than anyone I know beacuse of the healthy eating habits she picked up from being on the diet. She, like me, was a sugar addict, but because of the GD verdict she was forced to for the first time in her life give sugar a true kick to the curb and it ended up giving her a healthy habit that has lasted her to this day (her baby girl is now 4!)

So hopefully that is inspiring? :)

ah man!! I'm sorry :( but I find the above story very inspiring! Maybe it'll be a good thing? And surely you could still eat a piece of fruit or something for a bit of a sugary fix, right? I have no idea...but I hope that's true!

I had GD with the twins. The diet didnt help me at all. Even eating only 6 carbs a day, I was a blood sugar nightmare, so I had to have insulin injections before and after meals. It sucked. I found that Crystal Light helped give me a sweet drink plus got me to down the 5-6 32oz pitchers of water I needed to drink daily. I loved the little crackers with cheese as my evening snack. The dietitian really helped explain things to me and get a diet together.

Oh, booo. My mom had it with my brother, but I have no experience with it.

:-( I'm sorry. Although technically, you won't be eating crap...you'll be eating healthy goodness. I'll be eating crap, which is, according to my husband, why I am anemic. Because I eat crap like fast food and sweets...which truly is crap.

Although today I ate a salad...that tasted like crap.

Sorry. Hang in there.

Oh no. First bedrest, and now this. You have my deepest sympathies. I have no advice, only sympathy. And feel free to complain as much as you want. You are more than entitled.

Oh Christine!! My bf had the GD with her daughter. It actually wasnt THAT bad (according to her) and she did manage to not gain a lot of weight too. If you wanted her email for someone to lament about it with, let me know. I am sure she wouldnt mind sharing her experiences with it. Hang in there girl!! Just keep the end goal in sight...two beautiful healthy boys!! :)

Dangit, I sure wish you'd just get a break already. Sorry about the GD. It's something that I dread too. Hope that the diet isn't too bad and don't forget that strawberries and mangoes are good and tasty and are actually better tasting than candy.

Crap indeed. Hopefully it won't be too horrible!

That sucks. Luckily I don't have any personal experience to share with you and I'm very much hoping it stays that way. WTH are you supposed to do on bedrest if it isn't eating sugar???

Holy crud.

I'm so sorry you got this news.

Trying to think of something witty, but nope. Just general suckage.

Boo on the GD!

I get my 1 hour glucose test tomorrow...and I was hoping that God would give me a break on this one as I feel like I've gone through enough with this pregnancy already.

I'm sad for you and for me to see that this theory does not seem to hold any water.

On a much brighter note, I'm thrilled to see you at 28 weeks...that's a huge deal! I'm following close behind you at 27 and am excited to get to 30 as well. Seems like I remember when I did bedrest with my son that 32 weeks was a 'magical' week as well.

...But a measely 4 weeks away.

Praying for you and your little beans as always.

Oh CRAP!!!

I am so sorry! But happy happy happy that we both made it to 28 weeks...96% survival rate is nothing to sneeze at. :)

I'm so sorry that you've been hit with this $hitstorm of bedrest and GD lately. You are a warrior mommy and deserving of the title Queen once all this is over!

GD is no fun...people in my family get the borderline variety. However, my sister had to abide by the diabetes diet because they didn't tell her until after delivery that she was only borderline diabetic. Her personal silver lining: You get to have 1/2 cup of ice cream every day!

I was just told to refrain from eating all the stuff I like. Which was unfortunate, because the only thing I craved was Root Beer.

Sorry you've got the GD...

Sorry, Sunny about the GD. Take good care and www.diabetes.org is an excellent resource for recipes, information, and support for all types of Diabetes including a special section on GD.
Please let me know if you need anything.

It is only temporary, I believe so.
When I was pregnant with my boys, I was told that have low blood (not sure how to say it), it happens because the baby takes a lot from me...

since you got twins, thus things are different and kind of scary to you, as soon as the babies are safely born, you will recover in no time.

be hopeful, stay calm, and things will turn out simply fine.

best wishes.

Have no fear my darling!!! Diabetes diet and weightloss - my parents went on the Diabetes diet by Prevention Magazine a number of months ago and have lost a ton of weight! This includes my father and as you know, he has been the biggest challenge! My parents look wonderful and are doing really well for themselves! I just wish I could be settled enough now to start it myself!!! Just think - once the babies are here, you'll likely be able to eat cupcakes again! Right now, they are just making sure you don't blow up during pregnancy like I usually do. Lucky!!! ;)

Oh, you poor thing. It will suck for the next little while. You look so good from your prfoile pic that I can't beleive you have any weight to loose, but just in case there is any, imagine how HOT you will look once the boys are here. You will have the whole mother's group jealous!

Oh no! I'm sorry- I know it sucks to get this news, but I promise its not all bad. I'm 31wks and have been on insulin since month 2 (i was insulin resistant before i got pregnant, so they've been watching me very closely). My diet is not that bad at all. I eat chocolate covered pretzels or 1/2c of ice cream with peanut butter and sm glass of milk, everynight before bed. And yes this is dietician and dr approved! You just have to know how to keep the portions small and balanced. I've gotten so used to it that it doesn't bother me that much.

However, I will absolutley admit that at times it is frustrating - hard to find good options at restaurants, sometimes hard to stick to the eating schedule. But all in all its good. I do eat much better than I did before I got pregnant. And while I would love to chow down on some pasta and bread at a meal, I've learned to weight what carbs matter most to me - is orange juice worth my carb at this meal? Or would I rather have some bread?

And I do have to say that I know that the diet is responsible for me not having gained any weight yet in my pregnancy (woohoo!) and baby boy is right on schedule for his growth.

I will agree with another comment that said your sugars can be all over the place even if you eat well. Just keep up with it and understand that some things are out of your conrol - your hormones can jack up your sugars even though eat just what you are supposed to. Try not to get frustrated and let your doctor adjust your insulin as needed.

Good luck - I'm sure you'll do fine and that it will help you out in the end!! :)

Oh yuck...that really sucks! I am so sorry!!!

Aw, that really sucks. If it helps, all the women I know who had GD say that they got used to the diet restrictions after a week or two, didn't really mind it after that, and lost all their pregnancy weight really really fast after giving birth. But yeah, if I were in bed all day, I'd want some carbs.

Nooooo! Ugh....I am so sorry....

Sadly, I am as knowledgable as an paleantologist being asked about philately....

I just hope that the docs find some way of managing the condition....

I just have your run of the mill type 1 diabetes. I am used to the drill of it, pregnancy just makes it more interesting and time consuming. Just think of how it is something you can actively do to help your boys! Or at least that is what I always told myself when I was dealing with all of the extra crap that comes with diabetes and pregnancy.

Good morning, Sunny:

How are you?
I hope that you feel better today,
Kind of missed you yesterday and told myself to stop by today for sure...

Best wishes,
You Deserve Happiness...

Oh, I am so sorry, that really sucks.

It doesn't seem fair that you are stuck in bed and can't even eat cookies in it.

Okay! So my mom was recently diagnosed as pre-diabetic meaning no insulin shots for her yet, but she has to do the finger pricking and diet change. I wasn't sure what to expect when we visited them. It was a lot of good food and delicious - just small portions of starches. I'm sure that you can adjust (assuming the GD diet is similar). It means a sad parting with huge plates of pasta and rice all at once, but my mother still had a slice of pizza now and then, and donuts/cookies sweets (not even the low-sugar variety) -just small amounts. It's totally do-able! I'll get some recipes from her :) You can do it!!

I am crying a tear for you about those cupcakes in the short-term, but hey, once the babies are here, you know I'll bring you some right ;)

Hey, I have it. I found out and got put on bed rest on New Years Eve. The first week was the worst, because I was soooo hungry. It's not terrible. Feel free to swing over to my blog.

I am COUNTING DOWN the days till my baby gets here and I can have a damn cookie.

Ok there are a lot of comments before mine and I am not very patient so I didn't read them lol...so if I repeat advice I'm sorry!!!

I am type 2 diabetic all the time, but the only time it's been really controlled is while pregnant. First advice, ask for a Freestyle meter! They require the tiniest amount of blood and you can test on your arm :)

It's a big adjustment, and I have to take shots...it was real hard for me to get used to the shots, it seems like a full time job in its own. Remember that certain foods (pizza, corn, mashed potatoes) will make your sugar go wayyyy up! And don't believe because it is sugar free that it is ok but usually it isn't!

Learn to count your carbs and as long as you stick to that, you can really work in your favorite foods in moderation.

I'm here if you want to ask me ANYTHING :)

I'm sorry! I had GD with my first pregnancy, but it wasn't that big a deal. With this pregnancy (well, baby, born ten days ago) I was diagnosed at 10 weeks and had to follow the blasted diet for 30 weeks. Baby was ok--a little big, but ok--and everything turned out fine, but I basically retrained myself in terms of how I eat. I had to use a little insulin, but honestly the insulin wasn't as big a deal as the meter. I found it easiest to work out a bunch of meals and snacks that I knew wouldn't wreck my sugar and just rotate them.

On the upside, I only gained a total of 7 pounds (you've got twins and are farther along, I know, but the diet really minimized weight gain) and the baby was 8 lbs 11 oz. In the ten days since she was born, I've lost 28 pounds. After my first daughter was born, I lost 37 pounds in the first four weeks after gaining 9. So I think the diet really does keep things down, and you get delayed gratification weight loss! Pulling for you...
